Google Purchases GreenBorder Internet Security Firm
GreenBorder offers a unique software designed to protect users online through a type of "virtual session."
GreenBorder's patented technology combines virtualization with strong security to create a "virtual session," a special environment within the PC that creates an impenetrable protective barrier between Internet activity and users' files and personal information. GreenBorder's virtual session prevents code from the Internet from using or changing anything on the PC, including files, registry settings, or memory in other programs. The technology does not depend on scanning, identification of malicious code, or updates during outbreaks.
This software is unique from the standpoint that unlike the other anti-virus and anti-spyware softwares available online that detect viruses through current virus definitions, GreenBorder provides a safety zone in which the Internet content downloaded or pages visited by the user are placed into a temporary zone, which can never see or touch users' files.
While other security products focus on recognizing threats that are already known to be bad, GreenBorder protects against threats that aren't known yet or are undetectable. GreenBorder ensures that Internet content can never see – or touch – users files, or spy on them when they enter personal information online.
Additionally, it appears as though the GreenBorder software can be used to eliminate any traces of Internet activity, which essentially removes any malicious code from memory.
With GreenBorder, malicious code that finds new exploits in browsers or applications can't escape the virtual session to do any harm or see any files and data. Inside the virtual session, GreenBorder uses just-in-time virtualization to make disposable copies of whatever resources a program needs in order to run. Because the virtual session is built dynamically, it can be reset at any time to eliminate any traces of Internet activity, flush any malicious code from memory and discard any virtualized resources.
GreenBorder offered two versions online. One was for the consumer and the other was for business. Prior to the acquisition, GreenBorder was selling the software for the business user. Google has not said what changes, if any, will take place with the software. As of today, 5/29/07 the software could not be downloaded for new customers. I suspect the GreenBorder website is probably being revamped to display the Google brand.
On a statement from their old website it states: "GreenBorder Pro's patented technology is always current and doesn't require updates or maintenance." This is unique, when compared to Norton and McAfee, which do require constant updates for the anti-virus softwares. I look forward to trying out this new technology.
